Engineering students develop a two-wheeler JCB

The lack of coordination between various civic authorities such as telecom companies, water authorities and the public works department has resulted in huge damage to most roads in the city.

The authorities, after digging up the roads, do not bother to re-lay them to the consternation of the public. But a group of students seem to have found a solution to the problem.

Students of Carmel Engineering College in Pathanamthitta, have developed the 'Bycivator', which they say will ensure speedy and orderly digging of roads.

"It simplifies the digging process for laying of telephone cables and pipelines. It is an uncomplicated device mounted on a two-wheeler. It is more effective and easy to operate as compared to a JCB," said Solomon Joseph who led the team that came up with this invention.

The Bycivator can dig a one-km stretch within 6 hours whereas manually it would have taken anywhere between 2 and 3 days.

It performs in a similar manner on hard surfaces too. Moreover, it doesn't result in damage to roads as it does precision cutting," Joseph said.

The Bycivator, he said, consumes only 1 litre of petrol per hour even while working on hard surfaces. The machine is multi-functional as it can be used to clear blocked drains and also used in rubber and coconut plantations, he said.

"It is very user-friendly and can be adjusted based on the purpose for which it is used. It can gain easy access on narrow lanes as it is fitted on a two-wheeler," Joseph said.
