8.9 quake in Indonesia; tremors/tsunami warning in India

Six-metre high waves likely: Tsunami centre A massive quake measuring 8.7 on the Richter Scale rattled northern Sumatra in Indonesia on Wednesday, at around 2:38 pm, because of which tremors were experienced across the eastern coast of India [ Images ], principally in Kolkata [ Images ], Chennai, and also in Bengaluru [ Images ]. A tsunami warning has now been issued by the US Geological Survey after the quake in as many as 28 countries, including India, Australia [ Images ], Sri Lanka [ Images ], etc. The USGS also said that the quake was centered 33 kilometres beneath the ocean floor, around 495 kms from Banda Aceh, the capital of Sumatra. India has also issued tsunami warning for Nicobar islands following massive earthquake off Sumatra coast. Initial reports suggest coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman islands also put on alert following the Sumatra quake. Meanwhile, strong tremors were felt across different parts of the Chennai on Thursday afternoon, PTI reported. People in multi-storeyed apartments and those working in high rise buildings rushed out in panic after they felt the tremors.
